Pattern manipulation resources?

dart manipulation

If the T-shirt project is teaching me anything it’s that my “who reads the manual, let’s start pushing buttons” approach to life only makes for moderate success in pattern drafting.

While I firmly believe that one of the best ways to learn about anything is to screw it up a lot, I’m frustrated that I’m not being able to produce what’s in my head because my pattern manipulation skills need to be sharpened.  My #4 t-shirt turned out okay (I’ll blog it tomorrow or the next day), but I’m annoyed with my #5 t-shirt because other than my shoddy messing around with gathering, it turned out great.  Perhaps my early success with the CAbi knockoff made me a little too reckless.

I have the 2000 edition of Patternmaking for Fashion Design on reserve at the library, but in the meantime, does anyone know of any good resources for pattern manipulation?

  1. I can’t find any contact information for you anywhere! might be a good idea to have a contact form or Gravatar link (the latter if you’re worried about protecting your blog related email from spam bots).
    Send me an email please.

  2. Got to http://www.silhouettepatterns.com
Peggy Sagers has lots of good videos on pattern draping. Go to her site and look under past replays on the left hand side.
Hope that can help some, she talks a lot about fit.

  3. I completely agree that the best way to learn is through mistakes. I’ve made so many. I have a good pattern making or modification book for you. I’ve learned everything about pattern drafting from this book. It’s vintage and you’ll have to hunt it down via eBay or etsy but it’s awesome and simply worded. It’s dorothy moore’s, pattern drafting and dressmaking, copywrite 1971.

  4. I also think that a good theoretic book + a lot of mistakes is a good way to learn pattern drafting. And to take a class or two.. (I’ve done all those things, and still there is so much more to learn!)
If you are looking for dart rotation results – here is a post I like on the subject: http://beangirldesign.blogspot.dk/2012/02/seriously-i-said-rotate-so-lets-see.html

  5. The book you’ve requested at the library is great, IMO. My Mom gave me an earlier version as a gift a few years ago – it costs so much, and that was the only way to get it for myself!
